Vinyl Flooring: Professional Installation or DIY?

Flooring installation is an ambitious project for any DIY-er. Here are some of the questions you should ask before you attempt installation on your own:

Do you know what’s lurking beneath your current flooring?

When you pull up your old carpeting or linoleum floor, you have no idea what condition the floor beneath will be in. In fact, there may be multiple layers of existing flooring below. Installing luxury vinyl floors is not simply gluing down LVT or LVP. Like most home projects, the unknown can cause frustration, especially when you are not experienced.

Are you prepared to repair and level your subfloor?

Once you have removed the old flooring, the subfloor will most likely need to be prepared. An ideal subfloor will be dry, level, and free from damage. This may require applying leveling compound over tile or laying down a new subfloor to create a smoother foundation. Next, you will need to lay out the luxury vinyl tiles or sheet vinyl flooring. This requires measuring, cutting and laying the vinyl. All of this takes time and patience, and if you tend to rush through a project, it might be a good idea to consider hiring a professional instead.

Do you have the proper tools to measure and cut accurately?

You will need to accurately measure your space and determine the correct amount of vinyl to purchase, factoring in overages, potential damage, and mistakes.

Can you handle the physical demands of flooring installation?

Installing vinyl flooring requires a lot of bending and kneeling that can be hard on the knees and the back. The entire room typically needs to be emptied before the installation and moved back once the job is complete.

Do you know how to properly grout floors?

Generally, hiring flooring professionals will have more experience creating a realistic grout on vinyl flooring.

Should you hire someone to install your new vinyl floors?

We have all been there where we attempt a project and quickly regret not hiring a professional. Installing vinyl floors requires removing existing flooring and preparing the subfloor to ensure a clean and level foundation. You can make costly mistakes if you do this step incorrectly. Plus, incorrect installation of vinyl floors may cause the vinyl tiles to function improperly and may void the manufacturer’s warranty.
