Ceramic Tile Flooring Considerations

Ceramic Tile is made from clay mixed with minerals and water that is fired in a kiln at a high temperature. The patterns that appear on each Tile are achieved through a colored glaze that is applied to the surface. Multiple colors can be applied to the Tile’s surface in order to create the desired pattern visual. Once all of the glaze colors are applied, the Tile is fired in a kiln to meld the glazes to the clay Tile. During manufacturing, Ceramic Tiles are calibrated for minimum variation in size and thickness. This helps ensure a more consistent looking floor.

  • Texture: Ceramic Tile Flooring replicates the real feel of natural stone by including a slight grain on the surface.
  • Chiseled or Straight Edges: Depending on the look you’re trying to achieve, you can select a Ceramic Tile with a chiseled edge for a casual, tumbled stone look. A straight edge looks more refined because each tile forms an “L” shape instead of being chiseled or eased. This style of Ceramic Flooring lends itself to a more modern look and feel.

During manufacturing, Ceramic Tile Flooring may be imprinted with a variety of patterns or colors, including stone visuals and other looks. Multiple colors of glaze can be applied to Ceramic Tile to add greater color and depth. A lesser degree of variation produces a contemporary look. Conversely, greater variation creates a casual, rustic effect.

Tile coloration is measured on the following scale:

  • Monochromatic: Tiles are identical with one color throughout. (Empire® does not carry any monochromatic Ceramic Tile.)
  • Moderate: Some color shade and texture variations appear from Tile to Tile.
  • Extensive: Color, shade and texture variations appear from Tile to Tile. However, Tiles share a common hue.
  • Extreme: Dramatic variations exist between Tiles, which may appear to be different colors.

Ceramic Tile Floor & Maintenance Tips

  • Grout, the material used to fill spaces between Ceramic Tiles, requires ongoing maintenance. You must periodically clean it to remove surface build up.
  • Use a professional-strength product for heavy-duty Tile or grout cleaning.
  • Place pads on furniture legs to minimize abrasions and wear on your Ceramic Tile Flooring.
  • Place protective mats at doorways to help keep dirt and moisture off your floor. Similarly, adding mats in high-usage areas, such as by your kitchen sink or stove will also help prevent wear.
