Director of Tax

The Director of Tax is responsible for overseeing all corporate tax matters, including income taxes, indirect taxes (such as sales and use, property, and gross receipts taxes), and unclaimed property. This role leads state tax audits, manages the tax team, and partners closely with Finance, Legal, and executive leadership to develop and execute compliant, forward-looking tax strategies. The Director of Tax is expected to operate independently, communicate effectively at the executive level, and support the company’s continued growth.

Compensation Information: $200,000.00 annually plus bonus
Responsibilities:
- Lead the overall tax function and define an effective tax service model aligned with company growth
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws across existing and new jurisdictions
- Partner with the CFO, Corporate Controller, Legal, and external advisors to develop and implement long-term tax strategies
- Direct tax planning and research to optimize effective tax rate, cash taxes, NOLs, and capital losses
- Oversee year-end tax close, tax provisions, and coordination with external auditors
- Lead all indirect tax activities, including sales, use, property, and other indirect tax filings
- Drive process improvement, automation, and technology enhancements for indirect tax compliance
- Manage Vertex O Series sales and use tax system and related process improvements
- Serve as primary liaison with tax authorities, auditors, and external consultants
- Oversee preparation and filing of all corporate tax obligations, including income, gross receipts, sales, property, unclaimed property, and partnership return
- Own tax aspects of potential M&A targets
- Perform analysis related to the impact of business decisions and legal/regulatory changes
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Process Oriented – All tax matters are the responsibility of the Director of Tax. Director needs to have process in place to ensure timely filings and audit responses and be able to highlight potential issues. This includes ensuring that the proper internal controls are in place within the processes.
- Team Leader – Director will be part of a two-person team, but as part of establishing the direction of the team will need to assess resource needs to achieve strategy and make recommendations.
- Knowledgeable and Strategic – Director needs to stay current on tax laws, regulations, and guidance. Candidate will be able to identify issued/opportunities, perform analysis, and present recommendations. Must have indirect tax expertise.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 8 - 12 years’ tax experience.
- 4 + years’ leadership experience.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Strong ability to manage multiple work streams, perform analysis, and present recommendations related to tax functions.
