Berber Carpeting

Berber Carpet Overview

Berber Carpet features low-profile, loop pile construction that can have flecks of color throughout the fibers. The casual style of Berber Carpeting compliments almost any type of décor, from contemporary to country. We’ll help you find the right Berber Carpet color and type based on your practical considerations, price and budget – ask your Sales Representative about some of these features during your appointment and learn more about Berber Carpet.

Berber Carpet Considerations

Berber Carpet is distinguished by fibers shaped into thicker loops to form the Carpet’s surface. Berbers can have a combination of smaller and larger loops that feel comfortable, yet firm underfoot. This gives Berber a distinct look and less consistent pattern than other Carpets. Typically, Berber Carpet features a subtle, speckled look that creates visual interest with lighter and darker flecks of color, however, there are Berber styles offered in a solid color. The overall effect is a casual, comfortable look and feel. Each type of Carpet fiber possesses distinct characteristics. Fibers can influence price, color and performance. Your Sales Representative can explain your options for Berber Carpet, these may include:

Empire Today® offers five distinct Berber Carpet fiber options for your home decorating convenience. Each fiber works wonderfully with Berber Carpet's unique characteristics. These five fiber options are:

  • Nylon: Nylon is a great choice for Berber Carpet. The strength of the nylon fiber can give Berber Carpet extra durability and can help it resist wear in high-traffic areas. Nylon can be treated to resist stains and shed soil making it a good choice for rooms that receive daily use. Nylon Carpet in Berber works beautifully in a Den, Rec Room or Living Room.
  • Polyester: As a fiber, polyester is more porous allowing it to accept color exceptionally well during the dying process - this makes it a bright, inviting and easy-to-clean fiber option for Berber Carpet. Polyester is rugged enough for heavy traffic areas yet soft enough for Bedrooms. Look for a selection of polyester Berber Carpets woven from recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), the same polymer used to make plastic bottles. Recycled fibers are friendly to your budget and the planet, so consider polyester for your home.
  • Olefin/Polypropylene: Well suited to Berber Carpet varieties, olefin/polypropylene is well suited for high-traffic areas and can be installed in a variety of settings. A solution-dyed fiber, olefin/polypropylene can resist fading and remain bright for years. Solution-dyed Carpets do not require as much water or heat during the manufacturing process, making them a more environmentally-friendly option. Plus, it makes olefin/polypropylene an excellent option for areas that receive plenty of sunlight.
  • Triexta: For a fabric that combines the easy care of synthetic Berber Carpet with the softness of a natural fiber, consider triexta. Made from a polymer known as Polytrimethylene Terephthalate (PTT), triexta is soft and resists fading in sunny rooms. It will also retain elasticity and remain inviting in high-traffic areas and hallways.

  • Wool: Wool remains a popular choice for Berber Carpet because of its soft texture, extraordinary durability and soil resistance. This high-end fabric is natural and comes from a renewable resource, so it's also an eco-friendly choice. Wool's softness and natural look make it a good fit for short-piled Berber Carpets. Empire Today Carpets made from this material have a decadent feel that you can cherish for years.

Empire Today offers a range of durable Carpet padding options for your home. The dense pile of a Berber Carpet can give it natural insulating and sound-muffling properties. Our rebond padding can make Berber Carpet feel soft and inviting, and it can also soften the impact of foot traffic on Berber Carpet's tight-looped construction. Your Sales Representative can recommend the ideal padding for your Berber Carpet style, location and budget.

Pet-Friendly Carpet Padding

Have a cat or dog? We have a special pet-friendly pad designed with pets in mind. Empire® offers a P.U.P. (Pet Urine Protection) Carpet pad manufactured with a moisture barrier to help resist penetration of accidents and spills.

Carpet Care & Maintenance Tips

Although some Berber Carpet options are durable and stain-resistant, every customer should keep a few easy-to-remember cleaning tips in mind.

  • The dense, low loops of a Berber Carpet can trap soil. Vacuum frequently to keep dust and soil from making its way into the Carpet.
  • Like all carpet with a loop pile, Berber Carpet can snag; keep sharp objects and chair legs from pulling the loops out of the backing.
  • Vacuum your Berber Carpet to pick up bits of dirt and debris. Since Berber Carpet has a short pile, it responds well to this type of treatment. In high-traffic rooms or corridors, you may need to vacuum every day to keep debris from settling.
  • Professionally clean your Carpet at least once every year. This can be accomplished through hot water extraction.
  • Affix coasters to furniture legs to help prevent pile crushing. Alternatively, you can shift the position of heavily-used furniture from time to time.
  • Use floor mats to keep dirt from building up near the entrances to rooms that feature Berber Carpet.
  • If your Berber Carpet has sprouts or snags, trim them as close as possible to the level of the surrounding Carpet.
