After the Holidays: A Fresh Start!
Jan 4

The decorations are down, and the New Year’s noisemakers have been packed away. This is an ideal time to review your décor with an objective eye for the year ahead. Start the process by deep cleaning, tossing-out accumulated “stuff” and repairing or tossing out worn items. Go through your home room by room and de-clutter, making piles for items to be tossed, donated, or placed in storage.

Once this basic spruce up is complete, determine if your décor is outdated and in need of an update. Are you tired of the color scheme? Does the furniture need an upgrade? Are the flooring and window coverings dated? Depending on your budget, think about ways to refresh your décor. Here are some ideas in no particular order:

  • Paint! This is one of the easiest and most economical ways to change the look of your rooms. Color can do wonders to update your home.
  • Lighting. Consider replacing dated lamps or lamp shades. You will be amazed at the difference this makes!
  • Slipcovers for upholstered furniture can be pricey, but will totally transform the look of your furniture.
  • Re-arrange wall art for a fresh perspective. Try moving art from one room to another.
  • Add mirrors! These reflect light and enlarge the space.
  • Unclutter book shelves and organize.
  • Reduce clutter. Remember, no more than three objects per table.
  • Toss out overgrown houseplants and replace. Simple and inexpensive!
  • Replace pillows and throws with fresh, up-to-date patterns and colors.
  • Replace old worn carpeting or flooring, and add a new area rug.
  • Toss out heavy, dated and fussy draperies. Replace with clean, streamlined window treatments such as Designer Roller or Roman Shades, Woven Wood Blinds, Shutters, and Real or Faux wood blinds.
  • Purchase a fresh new shower curtain for the bath and new towels for the kitchen.
  • Update bedding – new pillows, shams, bedspreads and throws.
  • Replace the hardware on kitchen cabinets.
  • De-clutter kitchen counters. Do you really need all those small appliances in view?
  • Purchase filing cabinets, file hangers and folders to get bills and documents under control and organized.
  • Edit toys and donate or sell outgrown items. Purchase baskets and hampers to store and organize all remaining toys and games.
There are countless other ways to refresh your décor and organize your home for the New Year – and I would love to hear and see your success stories! Send me your ideas and photos.
