Add Elegance and Style to Your Kitchen with Tile Backsplashes

In my business, we do a lot of kitchen and bathroom remodeling. One of the best finishing touches we put on a kitchen remodel is a tiled backsplash. Tile backsplashes are a great way to add an additional “wow” factor to an already amazing remodel. Over the years, we have done all sorts of backsplashes ranging from really simple 4x4 tiles in a straight pattern, to more complicated ones with different patterns rolling into others. There are a few things to consider when choosing a tiled backsplash.

The first thing I discuss with my clients is color. Unlike paint, a tile backsplash is not something you can just cover over if you do not like it. It will be a long term finish in your kitchen, so you are going to want to like the way it looks. Take into consideration all of the choices you already have made in your kitchen. The cabinet color, the counter tops, the floor, all of these would be considered permanent fixtures in your kitchen and should all coordinate with the colors of your backsplash.

The second thing I have my clients consider is material. There are several types of tiles that can be used such as ceramic, porcelain or a natural stone like travertine, granite or marble. Ceramic and porcelain tiles come in a variety of styles and colors and these days many of them are made to look like the natural stones. They give you a low maintenance way to add beauty to your home at a much lower cost as well.

Natural stone is equally as beautiful, but some can add a little maintenance to the project. Depending on the stone you choose, you will want to seal the backsplash after install, and it will be something you will have to do again over the life of the backsplash. The beauty of natural stone is what typically draws people to use it. Each piece will have its own distinctive look; however, with the beauty of natural stone, usually there is a higher price tag to go along with it.

The final item that clients like to do is in those taller areas I mentioned, like above sinks and cooktops, is to add a focal piece, like a medallion or an extra design within a design. This is where many people spend a little extra time on the design to give it a special touch. With their being literally thousands of colors, sizes and pattern options to choose from, it can be a difficult decision for many families to make. I always tell my clients to take their time and consider all of the options in front of them before making the decision. The backsplash in your kitchen will be a reflection of you, so you want to make sure you like it.
